Blepharoplasty
San Francisco Specialists

Upper or lower eyelids that droop and wrinkle can pretty easily contaminate an entire face with a look of fatigue and old age. Luckily, a slight adjustment to the eyelids can just as easily bring new life into a face, giving it a rested, more youthful appearance.

This surgical adjustment is called blepharoplasty or, less formally, an eyelid lift. For upper lids, it involves the placement of an incision where the lid's natural crease should be. When the lower lids are being improved upon, the incision is placed below the lash line. The surgeon removes excess fat and skin and then reshapes the area. This procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis under either general anesthesia or local with sedation.

This procedure can certainly be performed alone, but many San Francisco blepharoplasty patients enjoy the complementary effects of combining it with a forehead lift, face lift, or skin resurfacing.

Risks:
When pursuing any surgical procedure, patients should be aware of the risk of infection, bleeding, or reaction to anesthesia. When it comes to blepharoplasty, specifically, potential risks can include difficulty in fully closing the eyes, damage to the surface of the eyeball or surrounding muscle, glaucoma, and/or excessive swelling of the lower eyelid.

Recovery:
Blepharoplasty sutures are usually removed about 4-6 days after surgery. Swelling and bruising can take 1-2 weeks to decrease. Eye makeup can again be applied about 4-6 days after surgery, and contact lenses can be worn again about 7-10 days post-surgery, depending on personal comfort levels.
