Breast enlargement implants can
be inserted into the breast through one of three methods.
Appropriate incision placement during
breast enlargement surgery can lead to secure implant
insertion and inconspicuous scars.
Incisions used for breast enlargement
surgery by San Francisco surgeons:
One of the most common
incision sites is along the natural crease
under the breast, also known as the inframammary
incision. This incision gives the surgeon much control
over implant placement, thus final results, but also
carries the risk of obvious scarring and longer healing.
The second common technique is to
place the incision along the lower border of the areola,
which is the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple.
This technique is referred to as the periareolar
incision. Though it may not seem likely, this incision
leaves the most easily camouflaged scar and usually to
easy healing. If, however, the patient experiences healing
complications, the scar may become obvous.
The third of the more frequently
used techniques, also known as
the axillary incision, involves incision placement at
the side of the breasts, through the underarms. This
method leaves an easily hidden scar, but if a revision
surgery is necessary or desired, a new incision site
will have to be used, thus more scarring.
Which is the best?
You and your surgeon should discuss the advantages of
each method, as they relate to your body. The appropriateness
of one technique over another relies heavily on the
individual, their goals, and the results they desire
from breast enlargement surgery. San Francisco Specialists
surgeons will meet with you for a confidential consultation
to go into these and other details regarding the procedure.
