Breast implants were traditionally filled with a silicone
gel. However, in the early 1990's, the FDA retracted
their approval of silicone. Instead, breast augmentation
surgeons adopted implants with a silicone shell and filled
with a saline solution. Saline has long been safely
used in intravenous solutions.
Saline is proven to be a safe
solution, but it does have its problems. While silicone
gel implants produced round, smooth, natural results,
saline
lends
itself more toward eventual rippling or lumpiness. Of
course this is not necessarily frequent, and preventative
measures exist, so it's best to discuss the differences,
pros, and cons of every breast implant with your surgeon.
What's more, it's important to realize
that silicone never completely left the market, as it
is still turned to in certain situation. Male pectoral
implants are made from silicone, though not in its gel
form. Also, it is not rare for breast reconstruction
for mastectomy patients, when performed with an implant, to
use silicone gel imlpants. As of late, the benefits and
safety of silicone gel is being more thoroughly explored.
Be sure to discuss breast implant advancements with your
surgeon.
