Collagen is an injectible substance
that can help patients improve the superficial
signs of aging, correct skin imperfections, and even
enhance facial features. A true multi-tasker, collagen
has long been successfully used to achieve overall facial
rejuvenation.
Most specifically used for the fine
lines that run between the nose and outer corners of
the mouth and to enhance the lips, collagen implants
are injected into the skin in the area of treatment.
Our bodies have natural collagen that wears down over
time, part of the reason for superficial imperfections.
Because
of this, the body easily accepts the collagen implant
as its own. The collagen immediately fills out the area
and smooths facial lines.
One collagen treatment usually takes
about 30 minutes to perform, after which patients can
carry on with daily routines. As is the case with natural
collagen, collagen implants will wear down over time.
Depending on the area treated and the amount of collagen
injected, the duration of results can vary, usually lasting
for about 3-6 months.
Risks:
When pursuing any invasive procedure, patients should
be aware of the risk of infection, bleeding, or reaction
to any anesthetic used. When it comes specifically
to collagen, risks can include swelling, asymmetry,
lumpiness, or bruising.
Recovery:
Collagen patients are able to return to normal tasks
right after receiving treatment. No downtime or discomfort
is involved. Some redness may be evident immediately
following, but is easily camouflaged and quite temporary.
