Liposuction offers patients
the chance to finally improve the appearance of areas
of concentrated fat deposits when exercise, alone,
doesn't seem to do the job. In San Francisco, liposuction
is commonly used to treat the
hips, thighs, abdomen, waist,
arms,
calves, and neck.
With the use of a combination
vacuum-like device and tubular instrument, the fat
in the area of treatment
is suctioned out of the body. An incision just big
enough to fit the tube, or "cannula," is made, so scarring
should be kept to a minimum. Liposuction is usually
performed on an outpatient basis under either general
anesthesia or local with a sedative.
The best liposuction candidates are usually near their
ideal weight, but suffer this "problem area" of accentuated
fat. However, technological advancements have allowed
for the performance of large volume liposuction.
Risks:
When pursuing any surgical procedure, patients should
be aware of the risk of infection, bleeding,
or reaction to the anesthetic used. When it comes
to liposuction, specifically, potential risks
can
include lumpiness, asymmetry, changes in pigmentation,
or skin damage.
Recovery:
Liposuction patients are usually comfortable returning
to work about 1 or 2 weeks after surgery, but will
continue to wear a supportive compression garment
for another 2-3 weeks. The results of liposuction
can last permanently, but this requires that the
patient keep up with a nutritional diet and regular
fitness plan.
